A Necessary Shift: Delivering on Our Promise While Continuing to Innovate

When we launched Sustainable Classrooms, we set out with a bold and dual mission: to expand access to education while combating plastic pollution through innovative building solutions. From the beginning, we knew this work would not be easy. In fact, we embraced that reality, because meaningful change rarely comes without challenge.

Our first classroom in Togo was always intended to be a pilot project. Not just a structure, but a learning process. Recycling plastic into durable, safe, and scalable building materials is still largely uncharted territory. We stepped into this space understanding that we would face unknowns, and that part of our role is to help pioneer solutions.

Over the past year and a half, that expectation has proven true.

Our brick-making machine arrived in Togo damaged, requiring time and resources to repair. We encountered limitations with electrical infrastructure, both in output capacity and reliability. In response, and thanks to the generosity of our donors and a supporting business in Germany, we invested in solar panels, an important step toward both operational consistency and long-term sustainability.

Even with this progress, challenges have continued. Most recently, our work has been paused as we await the arrival of a critical supply: a mold release spray necessary to produce recycled plastic bricks. This shipment, ordered in December, has been delayed due to global shipping disruptions and remains stuck in transit with no clear timeline for arrival.

While these delays are frustrating, they have also created space for reflection.

Throughout this process, we have remained in close communication with our team on the ground. Our director in Togo, David, has been a vital bridge between the community and our board, ensuring that local voices remain at the center of every decision we make. What we continue to hear is simple and powerful: the need for a classroom now.

After thoughtful discussion and careful consideration, our board has made the decision to move forward with constructing our first classroom using traditional bricks.

This decision was not made lightly. It reflects our responsibility to the students, families, and community members who have placed their trust in us. By moving forward now, we can ensure that students have a safe and reliable place to learn as they complete their exams and look ahead to the next school year. It allows us to follow through on our promise, not someday, but when it is needed most.

At the same time, this is not a step away from our sustainability mission. It is a step forward in honoring the full scope of our work.

We remain deeply committed to developing recycled plastic bricks and will continue working through the challenges that come with innovation. This mission is bigger than a single classroom, and the lessons we are learning now will shape stronger, more effective solutions in the future.

To our supporters, thank you. Your belief in this work allows us to navigate both progress and setbacks with purpose. We are committed to continuing this journey with transparency, sharing not only our successes but also the realities that shape them.

The work continues and so does our commitment to building classrooms, creating opportunity, and pursuing sustainable solutions that last.
