Powering the Future: Our Next Sustainability Initiative

One of the questions we hear most often is:

“Do you have access to electricity? Does the power often go out?”

The short answer?

Yes… and yes.

We do have access to electricity in Togo, but it’s not reliable. Power outages happen often and without warning.

Togo experiences two rainy seasons each year, and when it rains, it rains hard. Downpours can last for days, and during that time, electricity is often unstable or unavailable. This is one of the biggest challenges for our recycled plastic brick production. But even in the dry months, the power can go out at any time.

On top of that, electricity is more expensive than you might think. Our monthly bills average around $50, and costs are continuing to rise.

Why Not a Generator?

A generator might seem like a cheaper option, but it comes with trade-offs we’re not willing to make.

  1. Environmental Impact: Generators require gas, a finite natural resource. Sustainable Classrooms is committed to environmentally responsible solutions, and we’re not willing to compromise on that.

  2. Long-Term Cost: While a generator could be a quick fix, gas is expensive and prices are controlled by major oil companies. Even though the resource is sourced locally, these companies often sell it back at a higher cost, creating a cycle of dependency and continued spending.

Why Solar Panels Are the Solution

Solar panels are an investment --- both financially and in our planet’s future. They cost more upfront than a generator, but they last for decades and can be relocated if our site changes.

We’ve estimated the full setup that includes panels, cables, batteries, and installation, to cost $9,500.

We’re actively speaking with others in Togo who have successfully installed solar systems. Most recommend sourcing panels from manufacturers in China, but we are also exploring local options to support regional businesses and reduce shipping-related emissions.

Our Commitment

We will not sacrifice our core value of sustainability for a faster, cheaper fix. Solar energy aligns with our mission to make thoughtful, long-term investments that benefit both people and the planet.

By going solar, we will ensure consistent, reliable power for our recycled brick production, without relying on fossil fuels, and create a model for other community-based initiatives to follow.

Join Us in Powering the Future

This project is more than a step toward reliable electricity; it’s a commitment to the environment, financial stewardship, and the communities we serve.
